Diane was in Crastyl City for the day, preparing herself for another night out. She hadn't actually told anyone that she was going out, which was strange for her, and she was planning to have a look around by herself. She knew that if she'd asked then others would come, but the very idea of her wanting to go to some of those places embarrassed her.
Now, however, it was far too early to even be thinking of drinking, so she got her phone and texted the first person that she felt like talking to alphabetically; Brynn. She remembered that she had been meaning to talk to him anyway, and knew that he was often in Crastyl.
"Hey, Brynn, it's Di- De," she amended quickly, not wanting him to think that she disliked the name he called her, "I don't suppose you're in Crastyl are you? I'm just grabbing some coffee. Fancy meet at Starbucks - the one beside the cinema?" she said all in one long sentence as she traced the rim of her emptying cup, scraping off the sweet debris of her Chai Latte.

Brynn was wandering the aisles of crystals and candles. He smiled at all the items. Crastyl City was one of his favorite places in the world. You found a new store every day. He smiled and gave a contented sigh as he picked up some incense, candles, gems, and new scrying tools, along with a deck of tarot cards. He decided to try to take up readings. He smiled paying and receiving the items in a brown bag with the store logo on front.
He walked out feeling good with his purchase. As usual the streets were crowded with a colorful bunch of people. He felt a vibration in his pocket stepping to the side of the street to read it. He smiled. Lucky him, De was in Crastyl City as well. Perfect he was planning to go get some coffee too. He texted back. 'I'll be right there.'
Brynn began making his way across the roads reaching the cinema rather quickly and then spotted the hidden Starbucks. He stepped inside noticing De immediately. He placed an order for a pumpkin spice latte and pumpkin scone. "Hey, what are you doing in Crastyl?" He asked her casually taking a seat across from her.

She smiled and looked up, waving to Brynn before he finally reached the table, leaning back and letting him join her, "Hey Brynn, good to see you," she said, smiling as politely as possible. It felt strange, almost forced. She knew how she had tread on such thin ice with him before, and it was an old habit that she had yet to get herself out of.
"I'm just waiting around, I'm going out later tonight." Almost as soon as she spoke those words she regretted them. She hadn't meant to tell anyone that she was going out, and decided to quickly change the subject, "So, what have you been up to? What have you been buying?" she asked, seeing the plastic bag he had by his side.

Brynn picked up his order. "Want half of my scone? It's really good." he smiled offering half. "Ah that's too bad I'm busy tonight, I hope you have fun." He shrugged with a frown. He sipped his scalding drink.
Brynn looked over at the bag. "This? A whole bunch of stuff, incense, candles, scrying tools, and my very own tarot deck." He smiled. "I want to learn reading now. Like palm readings and more." He said staring off in the distance. "I hear you have a step-brother here now." he said with a fiant smile. "Anyways how've you been we haven't hung out in a while” Brynn smiled it was true. It was almost a month after the cookie meet.

She smiled, saying "Yeah, sure!" to the offering of half the scone, taking off a small part and giving the rest back to Brynn. Well, it was no sugar cookie, but it was something. She secretly breathed a sigh of relief when he said he was busy, stupidly blurting out before she could think straight "Oh, what are you busy with?" when she really didn't want to know. It would probably involve Antosha, and that was more information then she was ready to hear.
She looked at the bag and nodded as he said the list, though her eyes turned wide as she heard the last item, "Um, you bought yourself Tarot Cards?" she asked, pulling a confused face. She didn't really want to be the one to say it, but she knew she had to; "Brynn, you're not supposed to buy yourself Tarot Cards, it's bad luck and more to the point it means they don't work. Listen, I'll buy the same pack myself and then we can give them to each other if you want. That way we can both learn." she offered smiling.
Oh, so news of Melville had finally reached the whole school, she said, lowering her head, "He is not my step-brother." she said, sternly yet quietly, "At least not yet. Our parents are dating, that's all..." she said, saying the words slowly, as if she was admitting to having some horrible disease.

Brynn told her out flat. "I'm probably going to do some more shopping around and then go out with some of my senior friends. I haven't talked with them in a long time." He said smiling. "I feel bad I don't mean to ditch you, it's just they asked first." He said smiling faintly. He took a piece of scone and chewed on it savoring the pumpkin flavor.
Brynn looked worried pulling out the tarot deck lacing it on the table. "So I guess I'll just give it too you know? Is that safe?" He frowned. He wished he wouldn't have made this mistake. Finally he heard the last part about Melville. "Oh I see, he kind of scares me." Brynn admitted to her. "What happen if you guys end up step siblings?"

She shrugged it off, taking down the last of her Chair Latte. It was starting to get cold, and she knew she would need a new one soon. "No, it's fine." she said, finally putting down the cup, a slight hint of relief washing over her. She did, for a second, wonder what Antosha was doing, but she quickly cast off those feelings. "Hang on," she said, standing up and going to the counter, asking for a refill.
She sat back down with her new warm drink, asking, "What was I saying?" frowning, "Oh, yeah, the Tarot. Um, you can give them to me now, or when I have mine to give to you. Depends if you trust that I'll get a pack to you." she said, warming her hands on the warm drink and blowing on it rhythmically, watching the steam rise.
"Yeah, Melville scares me too..." she admitted, looking into her cup, "The more I think about it the more I think that, well, that he's the one that spread the rumour about mum being alive." she looked down, and looked everywhere but at Brynn. "All he wants is to split the family apart. He'll do anything. He keeps threatening his mum that he'll join the army if she gets married, and that's worrying her sick. It's not fair."

Brynn took another bite of scone and drink. He loved fall for it's flavors and colors. He watched Diane get a new chai tea waiting patiently. When she came back he could smell the sweet drink. He began wondering where she was going anyways however decided not to ask.
He handed her the cards. "I trust you De." He smiled letting her take the cards. There was a silence until she mention Melville and what he was doing. "That's awful..." He said a slight look of shock on his face. People could be so awful.

She looked down into her warm drink, blowing on it more as she heard his words. He trusted her when he had no right to, and she told him that; "Brynn, if anyone shouldn't trust me it's you. I've made a complete fool out of myself and..." she looked away from him, sighing, and then looked back at him, "The reason why I wanted to talk to you today was kind of about Antosha. I know I've been a bitch and a half but... I just wanted you to know that I'm OK with it now. If you want to be with him, I'm not going to stop you. I'm hardly going to stop you if you don't, however." she said, her last words laced with meaning. She wondered if he knew about what had happened in the forest.

Brynn didn't believe her. "Diane, I know I can trust you, I know we may have been a bit crude toward each other. But that's behind us. I know that you're someone I can trust, you'll never lie to me, and I know you'll buy me those cards." He smiled handing her the deck. Ant was brought up. "Thank you, it means a lot but we've been pretty distant lately. I guess he's giving me space." Brynn said looking down. "I'm still confused, it's strange. When I'm not around him I want to be. When I'm around him I don't want to be." Brynn said with a long sigh. "I don't know anymore."

She watched him sympathetically, putting a hand on his arm and waiting in silence as she listened to him talk, waiting for a long moment to see if there was anything else that he wanted to say. Just being able to listen to Brynn meant more to her then anything, and she wanted her friends to be happy, putting it even before her own happiness. "Um... when did he start to become distant?" she asked, feeling her voice cracking. It couldn't have been... could it?
She nodded along to his problem, telling him, "I don't mean to be mean or anything, but it's possible that maybe you like the whole idea of Antosha more then him? I mean, when he's gone you think of this sort of perfected image of him, and that's always going to disappoint when you see him in real life. M-maybe you're just lonely." she said, realising how her words sounded. She was trying to find the balance between what she really thought and what she shouldn't say to split them apart.

Brynn thought back. "Uhm around after the night we were all at the pub. One the way home I revealed my confusion to him and he kind of backed off. Then it so happens we were reassigned the same room." He said taking a sip of his drink.
He listened closely. Maybe she was right. Maybe Ant wasn't really the guy for him. He looked down becoming more and more confused. "But, there are other times where I mean I do like him when he's around me, when I love it." He said rubbing his eyes from the pain growing in his head. He pulled his hands away to notice a slight sheen. "Er, I'll be right back I have to use the washroom." He got up his hair covering his eyes the whole time.
Inside he noticed moisture in his eyes. His contacts weren't in. Was he crying? He wiped whatever happened away and walked back out with a not-so-genuine smile. "Sorry I guess I wasn't feeling good" The same smile found it's way to his face. Brynn was good at this. Putting away emotion and showing a pretty face.

She watched Brynn closely, really concerned for his sake, listening to everything he had to say and not moving from the spot as he spoke, as he went and as he returned. "I'm sorry I said that, Brynn..." she said slowly to him, still shocked that Antosha hadn't told her that he had been moved into a room with Brynn. Come to think of it, they hadn't really spoken since the forest. "But... I was taught to speak the truth, even if its brutally honest, and I have to say that I think you just like to have someone there for you. I mean, I feel the same way. You just feel like you completely lose control, just because you're so, well, desperate to have someone love you back. It's a good feeling, having someone love you, and it's hard to say no to." she said, suddenly realising how fast she was speaking and trying to slow down, "But don't listen to me, I don't know what it's really like, only you do."

Brynn nodded taking in her advice and idea. He was quiet for a few moment just drinking his latte to let it all sink in. He didn't want to believe it. He wanted to believe in true love, not love because I'm desperate. He felt the tears welling up again before mentally pulling them back. He took a breath and nodded. "I guess so." That was it. That was all Brynn could offer back without saying something that would make him break. It was getting late now. They had been talking for a while and his pumpkin spice latte was chilly and the scone stale. He didn't know what to feel so he decided on the feeling of nothing. "I think maybe I need some time to think." He said. "I guess you should start getting ready for where your going." Another fake smile showed itself. When he really just wanted to go curl up somewhere.

She looked down, suddenly very afraid. Was she a hypocrite? Had she just demolished the thing she had just blessed only minutes before? "Brynn, I'm sorry, I didn't mean..." she stopped herself. She did mean it, she meant every word, and she wasn't saying it because it was Brynn, she was saying it because it was a friend.
Suddenly she really didn't want to go out anymore. Suddenly all she wanted to do was make sure that Brynn was OK, though she knew he needed some time alone. "Take care of yourself," she asked him, almost ordering him.
