She smiled sheepishly, and nodded quickly, feeling light-headed and nauseous. Her heart was beating quickly as she said "Promise," back to her. She knew that she wouldn't stop until she promised, so why carry on the charade? She pierced the food again with her fork, taking another bite. "Besides, as much as I hate it, it's better this way... Antosha's happy with Brynn beside him, and Brynn seems pretty happy too. They can be themselves, tucked away in that little box they've put themselves into." she said, stabbing her food again.

Mayu looked stunned, snapping her out of her ice queen routine. "Brynn is confused. Me and you both know that, and as much as Antosha can say he likes Brynn. The truth is he's scared himself. That box they put themselves in? Well, it's going to collapse around them. It's just a matter of time. Whether it's Brynn breaking Antosha's heart, or Anto deciding he doesn't want to put up with Brynn any more. The box is going to die." she went to the sink and began washing away the pasta sauce. Tears pricked at her eyes, it was so stupid. Why was she crying, none of this was her fault. Mayu slammed the plate into the sink and sat back on the counter, back to her ice queen looks.

Diane looked at her, confused. Why would she say these things, and more to the point, why would she be upset by them? She stood up slowly, putting her half eaten pasta dish on the counter, coming and sitting close Mayu, as close as she could without actually putting her arm around her. It was as much comfort as could give without really realising what was going on, "They seem happy. It's perfectly normal for them both to be a little uneasy, it's early days and they're only what, seventeen?"

Mayu turned to Diane, smiling again. "Yep, but it doesn't matter." she sighed, reaching into her pocket for a tiny box. "I couldn't wait, so your Christmas present is coming early. Don't worry, you'll still have one on Christmas." she dropped it in Diane's good hand and smiled. It had cost her a pretty penny but it was worth it. The silver chain was almost ancient, it was tarnished beyond belief but still worked well. It was an ankh penchant, the tarnished metal almost blanked with age and decay, instead of a space in the head a dark cat's eye had been placed inside. The penchant was the symbol for after-life but it could sometimes be used to ward off evil doers.

She looked down at the box, almost too afraid to open it. Curiously, slowly, she opened it, gasping lightly as she looked at the pendant. She recognised it as an Ancient Egyptian symbol, and it looked old enough to have been from those times. "Wow," she said, lifting it delicately in her hands and wrapping the thread around, getting a better look at the symbol. Great was her first reaction, now I have to find something as good for her... "Thank you so much..."
"Um, I don't suppose you could...?" she asked, holding up the pendant to her and trying to get the hair from her neck so that her friend could attach it for her.

Mayu delicately handled the ankh, putting it around Diane's neck and clasping it firmly. She smiled, it should work as long as she wore it. "Do you like it?" she asked, hoping De would. When she first saw it, she passed it by but had later returned because of lack for anything else. Just like with Brynn's book, Mayu just had a feeling about this sort of thing.

She smiled and nodded, carressing the pendant with her good arm. "Yeah, I do." she said, feeling strangely warm and protected with the pendant on. She wondered if it had any powers. She didn't know much about the symbol, but she knew that the Egyptians were renowned for their magical skill - and their false magic. "Now I have to get you something," she said, pouting slightly.

Mayu shook her head with laughter. "No way silly, I don't need anything. I give the presents, I don't want anything but the joy of buying the right gift." she said seriously. Why would she want anything any way, that was a silly thing to think about. Mayu lived for buying things for others, not wanting anything herself.

She blushed and looked down, wishing that she could believe that. She knew that that was exactly what Mayu thought, but Diane always knew that until she returned the present, then she would always owe Mayu that one favour, even if she tried to persuade her otherwise.
She looked down and sighed. Things were starting to get tough, and she was finally able to see things as clearly as she could. Her eyes began to fog up unexpectantly, as she said slowly, "Mayu... I really miss Antosha..." feeling that she wanted to cry.

Mayu new that had been coming, it was the reason the cat stone had been placed; for clarity of mind and heart. She wrapped her arms around De, trying not to touch her broken arm. "It's alright, he can be here whenever you want." she said, brushing away Diane's tears. It was a habit of Anto she had picked up, used only on crying girls or guys depending on who was using it.

She laughed, the laugh breaking her control and causing her tears to fall, all of which were neatly scooped up by the faithful Mayu. "It's not the same, is it?" she asked, looking at Mayu and leaning into her, "It's just been so long since someone's looked at me that way, and someone's actually been in love with me. Could he have just switched all of that off?" she asked, shaking her head. She didn't really want to know the answer. "I know it wouldn't be perfect, but it would be something."

Mayu sighed, trying to comfort Diane best she could. "He still likes you, but he has been hiding it because he's been confused." she explained. As a listener to both De and Anto she knew what the other would need to hear, and worked hard to pick it up form the opposite party. Hopefully she wouldn't be a spy in their eyes.

She closed her eyes tightly and put her head in her hands, murmuring, "That's not what I needed to hear..." slowly. Yes, it had been what she wanted, but what she needed was to know that he was unavailable, and never to return to her. Her tears flowed freely as she said, "I just want him here or gone, I can't stand this."

Mayu put her arms back around the other girl, trying to soothe her. "I'm sorry, I can't give you the answer. Only Antosha will be able to, and you know it." she said, trying to keep her voice calm. What was she suppose to saw to her friend? 'I'm sorry but he's out of your league'?

She nodded, slowly picking herself up. She felt suddenly weak and fragile to Mayu, and needed to quickly regain her old self. "Yeah, suppose," she said with an uncomfortable smile. "Listen, I better go... thanks-thanks for the pasta." she told her, "And the necklace. I'll catch you later?" she asked, backing away towards the door.
