Brendan continued to stare blankly at the wall, that hollow feeling still in the pit of his stomach. He thought for sure he was going to die. Something told him he wouldnt make it much longer. And truth be told, he was willing to give up, give in.
He rocked his head back and forth, making his hair stick up. He pushed it back down, only to mess it up again. He ran his fingers through it, pulling his hand back and finding a slight hint of blood. Somehow that wasnt surprising. He ignored it, wiping it on the sheet and making a pink smear.
The nurse came in to check his IV, and seeing that it wasnt dripping near as fast, left to get another IV, assuming that one was defective. She returned, pulling the first out and pushing the second in.
"Nn..." He said, biting his lip again and looking away.

She looked at him concerned, brushing his hand by his cheek. Was this a normal reaction to the IV? She shivered, remembering how he had been acting strange ever since he had been cut. "Nurse..." she called in a hollow voice, turning to him. "I... I think something's wrong." she told her, worry lacing her words as she dropped the tissue on the side and put her hands back around his. She wanted to tell him that everything was going to be alright, but without knowing what was wrong she couldn't make those promises.
She flicked between Brendan and the nurse, his pain running through her. "Is... is this meant to happen?" she breathed, looking at the pink stain on the sheet and back to the nurse wrapping her fingers through his and holding on tightly.

The nurse smiled and patted the girls hand.
"Its normal for being abnormal. He obviously has a severe fear or needles. Which would account for his beautiful face being so pale. The best thing to do when the doctor gives him his shot is to distract him, catch his attention quickly. But hes so out of it I dont think he would be paying much attention to begin with. He also has an infection in his body, a very rapid one if I do say so from experiance. Its trying to eat at his body, making his skin fragile." She said with a nod.
Brendan was fast asleep, his hand clutching Daines. His body lay limp, barely any color to it. He raised his hand and clawed at his shirt, then opened his eyes groggily. He looked confused, in pain. He turned over, facing Diane as he fell asleep again.
The nurse pulled him to the other side of the bed, not wanting him to pull the IV out. Brendan shook his head and tried to move back but she held him back.
"Come lay here, sweety. You need your sleep too. Besides, I dont think hes going to quit clawing at himself and thrashing until you do.
"Diane..." He moaned, biting his lip again.

She looked down at him, taking in the doctors words but shaking her head, "I'm fine..." she told her, sitting down on the side of Brendan's bed and softly brushing his hair away from his face, even though he kept moving around to make it come back.
She kicked off her shoes and pulled her legs up onto the bed, but still didn't lie down fully, but wrapped her arms around him, whispering to him "I'm right here... I'm not going anywhere," she said, intending to stay with him for as long as it took, watching over him like a guardian angel, humming the tune to some old lullaby in the back of her mind.

The nurse smiled and left the room, satisfied that the IV was dripping as it should. Brendann opened his eyes and grabbed Dianes hand, pulling her down onto the bed, whether she wanted to or not. He snuggled close, his arms wrapped around her. He rested his head on her shoulder, quickly falling asleep again. His foot was restless, jumping up and down against the other on as if it had a mind of its own. Brendan pulled his knees close, biting his lip again.
"Diane..."

She pressed close against him, putting on arm around him and using the other to softly brush his hair. "Shh.... I'm here... I'm not going anywhere...." she told him, kissing him softly on the forehead. "Just try and get some sleep, alright?" she said, her words whispering as she didn't want any loud noises to break him from his restfulness.
She looked down at him, putting a hand to him chin and brushing a finger against his lips, "And no more biting... they're my property now." she said softly, smiling down as she rested her head against the pillow, curling up into him. She knew she would never be able to sleep like this, but she hoped that Brendan would, and that she could watch over him and guard him from anything that dared rip them apart.

Brendan slowly slipped into sleep and was completely out by the time the doctor came in. Thank God for small favors.
Clipboard in one hand, a shot in the other. Brendan would have been sure to have freaked out if he was awake. He placed the clipboard down on a chair and tapped the needle a bit, before sticking it in Brendans arm. Brendan winced but didnt wake. The doctor reached into his cloak and pulled out another shot, pulling the blanket back from Brendans foot and stuck the second shot there. Brendan pulled his foot back quickly, shaking his head.
"Diane.." He mumbled, his hands balling into fists around her shirt.
"Theyll be right in to stitch it up.." The doctor whispered to Diane, then grabbed his clipboard and walked out.

She watched nodding as she felt herself grow cold, thinking of how much it would have hurt Brendan. She was forever grateful that the doctor hadn't woken Brendan, wondering how long he could stay asleep, and if there was any way of stitching it up without him waking. "Shhh... shh...." she said, but she pulled herself up unsteadily, looking down at the mark which the knife had left.
She looked at it, and looked around herself, seeing if anyone was around. It certainly looked infected, she noticed to her dismay, as the affect of her slight healing was almost completely reversed. She looked around a second time, before breathing a few words, a light glow in her hands as she her her hand just above his wound. She pulled away quickly, lying back down as quickly as she could, hoping that the doctors wouldn't notice. She had only saved him one stitch at most, and it was barely noticeable unless you had seen it happen. It may have been only one stitch, but she knew that Brendan would barely have been able to manage with those he had to have. "It's OK, I'm here," she told him, wrapping her arms back around him, pressing forwards and pecking him on the lips, before curling him into a ball at her chest.

Another nurse came in and stitched up his foot. Brendan didnt even twitch, for the shot had made it numb. She left, and the first nurse returned, and she removed the IV. She shook Brendan gently.
"Wake up, darling." She said.
He sat up groggily, rubbing his eyes. He looked down at his foot, then at Diane, now more confused than ever. The nurse handed him a pair of crutches.
"Thesell be your best friend for the next month or so." She said and handed him his discharge papers. She left, leaving Diane and Brendan alone.
"Where am I? Whys there... things in my foot?" He said, reaching down and trying to pull them out.

She pulled his hand away quickly, incase he pulled them out. "They're called stitches, babe," she said, making sure that he wasn't going to try and pick at them anymore, wondering if there was something that was meant to be covering his foot.
"Here..." she said, passing him the crutch as she slid off the bed, all of her muscles stiff. How long had they just been lying there? She was more tired than she'd realised, but she wasn't going to let that get in the way. "Do you not remember anything?" she asked softly, wondering what the infection had done to his memory. "What's the last thing you remember...?" she asked him, curious and remaining patient, remembering how frightening it was when she had hit her head, feeling slightly out of sync with the entire world.

Brendan looked at her, then tried to force himself off the bed, leaning on the crutches. He had a feeling this was going to be a very long month.
"I-... I remember our date... And the woods.. And outside in the parking lot... And then I dont remember anything..." He tried to hold the papers and use the crutches at the same time. He finally gave up and bit the corner, not caring what the woman in control of the discharge thought of this.
"I cant hold your hand.." He mumbled, looking at her glumly.

She smiled sympathetically, taking the discharge papers out of his mouth and holding them. "I'm sure you'll live with not holding my hand for a few minutes," she said with a soft smile, putting her hand on his shoulder since it was the best she could offer while he was using the crutches.
She smiled, walking slowly and giving him plenty of time to get used to using the crutches, careful not to rush him, "I'm not surprised you don't remember much, you were pretty out of it." she said with a small shrug, though even just remembering it tore her apart, "You got an infection, ended up unconscious for most of it," she told him, trying to sound as matter-of-fact as she could, though she found it hard to look at him in case she saw the pain that it had put her through.
She took her phone out of her pocket, ashamed that she'd had it on the whole time they were in a hospital, but still knowing that she needed to use it. They were close enough to the exit, right? "I'm going to call a taxi; I can't drive, you're probably half high and you can't exactly walk." she told him, already dialling in the number.

Brendan shook his head. He was sober as a judge. He wasnt even groggy anymore.
"I can drive. Im fine. Really." He said, smiling at her. He made his way to the release room, sitting down in the chair as Diane handed her the papers.
"I just need you to sign these and youre good to go!" She said, sliding some papers across the desk at him. He signed them quickly and got back up on his crutches. He made his way to the car, getting in and revving the engine as he put his crutches in the back seat.
"Thank you." He said to Diane, looking over at her. "How can I make it up to you, baby?"

She frowned, refusing to get into the car, but keeping the door open as she looked in at him, "Uh... you could make up by not driving? What happens if you need to make an emergency break?" she said, knowing that it probably wasn't a good idea to let him drive but climbing into the car. If he was going to get himself killed over this, he shouldn't have to go alone. "Please, just let me call a taxi," she said, knowing that he may have felt fine but it was hard to believe when it hadn't been so long ago that he had been barely able to talk. "Driving needs your feet, too, you know." she said, vaguely wondering if this was a automatic car or not. She didn't know a lot about cars, but she was fairly sure that both types needed pedals.

Brendan shook his head. He laughed a bit, leaning over to kiss her gently.
"I injured my left foot, Diane. You drive with one foot, and its your right." He said, pulling out of the parking lot and snapping his seatbelt as he did. He drove down the interstate again, it seeming to be the easiest way to and from places. And at this time of night, empty.
He drove back to school, pulling into the parking lot and killing the engine once hed parked.
"I guess you should be getting to bed." He said, grabbing his crutches and sliding out of the car. He leaned on his crutched, wondering if he should walk her to her dorm. At least to the door.
