Brendan signed the papers with a weak hand, his scribble worse than usual. He shivered with cold, the doctor just saying that it would go away with time, that he had nothing wrong with him and he was free to go. Long ago, his phone had died. Long ago, he had lost hope. And so he would leave to go home alone.
He pulled himself up onto the crutches the staff wanted him to walk on. They had broken almost all of his ribs during his stay, and he would live with those broken ribs forever. He walked out, realizing he had no way home. His car had been taken away long ago by Braxton.
Thunder rumbled, lightening cracked, and the sky broke, rain spilling from every grey cloud in the wide sky. He walked out, the crutches beneath him only for support. His tears mingled with the rain as he made the long walk back home. His heartbeat was faint in his chest, had been for days. But he didnt care. With a little luck, he would die alone in the woods somewhere.

"Ah oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck...."
"Diane, please, just relax, you're scaring the fuck out of me!" Bexi shouted at her, holding onto the dashboard.
"Why-why do there have to be other cars?"
"Because you're on a fucking road!" Bexi shouted back to her, knowing suddenly that this really wasn't a good idea.
Diane was at the hands of Beetlejuice, the car which Bexi had brought her back from home. It had been her brother's car, and Diane really had not wanted to learn to drive. "Oh fuck, its starting to rain!" she cried out, her car crawling along at way below the speed limit, too terrified to go any faster. "Oh my God, BRENDAN!" she shouted.
"Dia, the fucking ROAD!" screamed Bexi, grabbing onto the steering wheel.
Diane's eyes widened, a car screeching into a swerve away from her car as it came dangerously close. Bexi's quick change just narrowly missed the car, and angry beep from the car she almost collided with as it skidded off through the rain. Her car jumped and shook as it slided onto the sidewalk, coming to a stop.
Diane held onto the steering wheel lightly, breathing heavily. Then, she quickly unbuckled herself. "You fucking drive." she snapped at Bexi, ignoring as she called after her.
Diane slammed shut the door, running over to where Brendan was. "Hey baby," she said, pulling her coat tightly around herself. "Come on in, I'll give you a lift. Its OK, I won't drive this time," she said with a smile as she put her arms around him. "Why didn't you tell me you were let out? I was meant to be coming round..." she told him.

Brendan continued to walk, shrugging her off as he took small, slow steps. He looked like a child just learning to walk, his head down as he watched every step he took. The rain washed over him, made his hair stick to his forehead and cheeks and his clothes cling to his body. His shoes were full of water, making squishing noises with every step he took. But he didnt care. He was determined to get home. His bandages clung to his chest, about to fall off, but he didnt care about that either. He didnt care about anything anymore. Diane was back to her normal, easygoing life.
Brendan would never be the same.
His tears ran down his cheeks, his nose growing red from the cold wind blowing in his face. He was sure to get sick again. But he didnt care anymore.

Diane looked at Brendan, confused. She blinked a couple of times. "Brendan...?" she asked, following him. Had she done something wrong? Why was he acting like she didn't exist? "Brendan..." she followed him quickly, putting her arm back around him and stopping him in his tracks, looking him in the eyes and forcing him to do the same. "Brendan, what's the matter? Please, just come home with me, you need to get warm..." she said softly, her voice cracking as she pulled him close.
What was the matter? Was he using him while he was ill as just someone to hold onto, and now he was well was he just casting her away. She felt like she was going to cry, felt like screaming at him and holding him and kissing him and... she just honestly didn't know how to feel.

"Diane, look." He mumbled, shrugging her off as he looked into her beautiful eyes. His heart may have been broken into a million pieces, but it seemed to break further when he saw her again. It had been two weeks, and it had seemed just like it had when she had turned into that demon.
"Ive caused you enough shit. Youre back to normal, you have been for awhile now. Me? Ill never be better." He looked down at his sliced wrists, the rain running into the cuts and making them sting. "Beause Ive lost something that meant alot to me. So, Diane, just go. And find you someone else. Someone better. You couldnt have thought this would last. Not with a ruined, suicidal prick like me. Diane, Ill never change. The pain will never go away. I was in love. I still am. I just cant live with myself anymore. Diane, Im finally going to end this. Go find someone youll truly love.."
The tears fell faster, his sobs hardened as he realized he had meant what he had said. He was going to end this. It hurt him to think he was loosing her, but it hurt even more to know she was truly miserable. He looked away, then turned and walked slowly off, his body shaking with fear and sobs.

Diane stared at him with wide eyes, the water trickling down her. Had she just been dumped? Was Brendan in danger? The world seemed to be going incredibly quickly, and she was lost, drowning in the emotion and pain. Everyone was going away from her, there seemed to be no one left. She couldn't leave Brendan.
"No..." she said, shaking her head, before running after him, taking no heed as she ran through puddles, the black water splashing her calves. She ran in front of him, looking at him with desperation, "No, Brendan, I won't let you do this!" she screamed, standing in front of him, "I'm not strong enough to hold you back, I'm not clever enough to say something that will blow you away but..." she looked down, tears rolling down her cheeks.
She fell to her knees, holding onto his hands as she looked up to him, her god, her everything. "Brendan, I love you. That's all I have," she gasped, the water soaking through her knees and legs. "You're all I have..."

Brendan dropped his crutches, leaning over and grabbing her shirt, trying to pull her up with what little strength he had. When she wouldnt budge, he dropped to the ground, sitting down in a puddle, his butt becoming very wet and muddy. He cringed at the cold, the wet. He cringed again as he felt the mud on his arms, the mud that had splashed up into his cuts as he sat down.
He looked over at her, feeling numb. Not from the cold. But from the pain, the constant aching. He pulled her hand to him, kissing it gently. He would have kissed her, had she not had so many useless rules he had to follow. 'No kissing in public.' 'Public display of affection isnt cool.'
'Brendan youre good for nothing.' Added his brother.
"Yeah.. I know.. Thanks for pointing it out.." He mumbled.

Her heart was beating fast in her chest, almost burning. She knew that neither of them should be putting themselves through it. "You remember what I said...?" she said through her tears, "That you couldn't hurt yourself because you belong to me?" she took his hand, pressing it to her chest as she shuffled, trying to steady her breathing.
She closed her eyes. Was she really going to do this? She knew that she'd been thinking it for a while, knowing that she was going to do it, but expecting it to have been in a while, preferably with him instead. "Brendan, you know you mean the world to me. You are my world, Brendan," she lowered herself down, looking up at him with wide eyes, "Marry me." she breathed, barely heard even by herself, expecting a struggle to say the words. She smiled to herself, the words sounding surprisingly easy, "Marry me, Brendan."

Brendans eyes widened, wondering if he was hearing things. It was loud outside, whatwith the thunder and lightening. But her words rang out, clear as bells to him. But still she couldnt believe it.
"Diane?" He mumbled, reaching out to touch her cheek, make sure she was really there. "Diane, you cant be serious.. T-thats a big decision, a huge responsibility. I dont want you rushing into things without really thinking about this, Diane.."
He reached over to her, pulling her closer. Something seemed surreal about the scene, the two lovers sitting -wet as could be- on the side of the road without a care in the world.

Diane laughed, feeling like she was five years old, but with the clarity and wisdom of an eighty-year-old. She was smiling, unable to stop, barely able to see as the smile made it hard to keep her eyes open. "I've never been more certain in my life, Brendan," she jumped up, trying to force herself back to Earth.
"Brendan, I spent every day by your side thinking of you, knowing that I wanted to be by your side as I grow old, knowing that I wanted to be with you every step of the way," she said, her words sounding out clearly and loudly, every word spoken from the heart, "I've done nothing but think of this, and know its right. I-I mean... if you say no, I'll still love you. I'll still want to be by your side until you're ready, or as long as I can be," she said, taking both of his hands and watching him hopefully, trying to force herself to calm down her hopes in case he said no, but her heart raced away.

Brendan kissed her cheek gently, his lips barely brushing her skin. He held her close, then pulled away a bit.
"You know I would never tell you no. We'll get your ring tomorrow, okay? First thing tomorrow. I think we both need a bath.. Or.." He stood, pulling her to her feet. "Depending on how fast you can get cleaned up, we can do it this evening. Whatever tickles your peach."
He bent down to get his crutches, leaning on them. His wrists still stung, but he would have to rewrap them when he got home. Along with his abdomen. He had wished he had been the one to do the asking. After all, he was the guy here. But it really didnt matter anymore. It was out there and he had said yes. He would get her any ring she wanted, any one at all. Money wasnt a problem, his dad had left him everything he had when he died. And it hurt Brendan now more than ever to realize that his dad wouldnt be there to see him get married to the greatest girl on Earth.
"I wish Daddy was here.. Youd love him." He looked over at Diane with tears in his eyes. "And he'd be proud to have you as his daughter-in-law.."

Diane was physically thrown back. "Wait, what?" she gasped, genuinely shocked as she scrambled to her feet. "Was that...? Did you say yes?!" She gasped, and she jumped and grabbed Brendan, hugging him tightly, before suddenly remembering his injuries. "Oh sorry, I just..." she laughed, shaking her head, hardly able to believe it. She felt like jumping and screaming, but all she could do was laugh, staggering around.
She smiled, wanting to hold his hand but knowing that she needed to support himself on the crutches. "I..." she shook her head, smiling, "I wish my mum was here, too," she said, a little somberly, looking down, though even that couldn't stop her good mood. "You'd have liked her, too. Everyone loved her. I-ur, guess you'll probably have to meet my folks. My Dad'll be a little pissed if he found out that this happened before he approved - he's a little old fashioned, but I'm sure he'll like you all the same." She laughed again, realising how the excitement was loosening her tongue.

Brendan shrugged, realizing Diane had already met everyone in his family. He would take a flight back home later this week to see his dads grave, and the new headstone. He felt bad that he was hospitalized when he had passed and had missed the funeral. But he assumed no one was there to begin with. No one had loved his dad as much as Brendan did. He may have been a drunk, but to Brendan, it was his drunk.
"Sounds nice.." He shrugged again, looking down at his feet. "Youve already met all my family. But thats okay, I guess. Just gives you more people to invite. Guess youre lucky. You get to pick all the brides maids and the grooms men. All I have to do is show up and look pretty.."
And suddenly his mood was ruined. The fact that he could do nothing at his own wedding bothered him. There was Kit, but he wouldnt want to come. And there was that guy -Zane?- that he had met in he garden. But thats as close as he had come to people before his two month hospitalization. He felt awful now, having no friends or family to share this with.
All he had was Braxton and Diane.

Diane smiled and shrugged, nothing taking away her good mood. "As long as you're there, it'll be perfect." she said, leaning forwards and pressing a kiss against his cheek. Family was overrated. She knew that she would be surrounded by her 'family', and the 'cousins', which would be an awkward mix. They hadn't really been together since they had lost one of their members, and she could only hope that Brendan would be a welcome new member, even if she knew she would no longer be one of the 'children'.
"Aarrgh..." she said, her hands on her head, "So much stuff!" she laughed, "I... I want to do it now, like right now, but... at the same time I really want us to both be well again, and make sure its just..." she looked up at him, "As perfect as you. As perfect as our hands together. I love you so much, Brendan. I love you!" she gasped, pressing her lips against his, holding him so that he could support his weight on her to enjoy the kiss.

Brendan leaned forward, into her, as he pressed further into the kiss. His tounge trailed across her bottom lip, and he expected -for a split second- that a machine would start beeping. It would take awhile before he was used to kissing her, holding her again. And it would take alot longer before he decided to break the promise he had made to himself.
"Im not perfect, baby. But Ill sure try to be. For you." He touched her cheek, gazing into her eyes.
"This isnt a joke, is this Diane? Youre not just playing, are you? Because this isnt funny.." He looked away, thinking that this was just some joke she had come up with while they were apart. And it certainly wouldnt surprise him, either. It wouldnt be the first time some girl had done something drastic just to get to him.
"Because I dont find breaking my heart to be as funny as some people do."
