Mayu smiled, slipping the phone into her pocket. Massive arches? She looked around, slightly puzzled, until she saw them. Her boots clicked against the ground, the only sound she made this whole time. She looked around her with wide eyes, trying to take in everything. So this was England? Mayu couldn’t help but be impressed, this was the first time she’d actually seen it. Then again it was one of the few times she’d actually looked around a city for something over then a pub. Her eyes were careful, not wanting to get to close to anyone, but at five in the morning she doubted it would matter. Be careful child. the words were gentle but chiding. They couldn’t have belonged to anyone but her uncle.

He drove as carefully as he could, though he couldn't help being a little reckless. As much as he hated to admit it, this was the first time he'd driven on his own since getting his license a month ago. It didn't help that the roads were covered in black ice, covered with a light sprinking of snow but he was lucky that it wasn't actually snowing.
Finally, he parked up, coming out of his car and looking up at the arches that marked the entrance to the city. "Welcome to England!" he said, unable to contain his smile as he spread out his arms wide for her. "Not exactly the nicest of our cities, but it'll do." he said loudly, ignoring the look that some of the locals were giving him.

Mayu turned around, noticing Mel there. Standing with his arms open for her. A smile couldn’t help but break over her face, watching him in his own territory. She smiled, rushing up to hug him. “It’s amazing.” She mumbled into his shirt. Then she looked up at him, still smiling widely. “Where to?” her voice was much softer then his had been, not wanting to draw attention to herself. New city, didn’t want to be jumped or anything.

He held onto her closely. For some reason her accent seemed more extreme now she was surrounded by English people, just as Melville had comfortably slipped back into a strong cockney accent. "It's a dump," he said, laughing as he took her towards the car, "Now the South, that's the place to be." he said, as the black Ka came into sight. He walked forwards and opened the passenger seat for her, suddenly afraid that it wouldn't seem like much. It was hardly a limo, but for a first car from a relatively poor family it was pretty good. And it was brand new. "You like Beetlejuice?" he asked, tapping the roof of 'Beetlejuice'.

"It's very Kawaii." she laughed, winking at him. His accent had slipped in, so she let hers find it's way back into her words. “Awww, you didn’t have to do that.” She said, slipping into the car with ease. Mayu was surprised, he had looked uncomfortable at the car. Sure, it was no Lamborghini, but it was still nice. Much better then anything her Uncle insisted she have, this seemed much more personal to him then her cars had been. Not that she’d ever be allowed to drive them, her license wasn’t in yet. She slipped on the seatbelt quickly, smiling up at Mel. “What’s in the south?” she asked pleasantly, though for some reason the word south came out as sooth. She didn’t worry about it though, at least he would be able to understand her.

He smiled, putting on his seatbelt and leaning in for a kiss before turning on the engine, "Everything's in the South." he said, smiling at her strange pronunciations and words, but he was too used to not understanding Geordie slang to question what her dialect meant. "My home, London. The people are... different. Here people stay a million miles apart, and they get so angry so quickly." he said, looking behind him as he carefully backed up the car, driving off, feeling very nervous at the wheel.

She stayed quiet, not wanting to ruin his concentration on the road. Mayu kept herself busy by looking out the window, watching everything flashing by. So he was from London? That was an interesting piece of knowledge, but she couldn’t return it. She was form Japan, but she was unsure what town. All her life had been spent moving from place to place, she’d never been told where she was from. Mayu laughed to herself, thinking about Boo fuming in the corner of her room. Carefully she shifted in her seat, trying to get comfortable in the car. Why was he even in a car? Couldn’t he have just teleported?

He pulled up the car back into the garage, the squeaking loud enough to alert the entire neighbourhood. He winced, thinking that he was probably giving a bad impression already. "Mayu, remember not to use any magic here OK? If Michael finds it..." he climbed out of the car, rushing around to open her door as well. "There'll be holy hell." he finished.
"Well, this is my place. I've only been here for a few weeks, though, so don't blame me for it," he said with a shrug. It was a beautiful place, and he was glad it wasn't as gritty as his old neighbourhood. Then again, it was hardly a palace. "Come on, I'll show you around."

Mayu got out of the car quickly, not wanting to make him agitated with her. “No magyk, got it.” She smiled at him, looking around the garage in wonder. Yeah, she’d seen one before. But never one that wasn’t piled high with mountains of books waiting to be sorted. She reached for his hand, trying to seem insignificant. This was new territory, so she had to be shy and polite. Anger neither side. Smile, wave, and blush. All would be acceptable if she had to meet his parents.

He smiled, watching her look through the garage, "It's just a garage..." he said slowly, taking her hand as he pulled her through the door, leading her into a small kitchen were his mother was (subtly) waiting for him.
The kitchen was large, but it also had a full set of tables and chairs tucked into the corner that was covered in old letters and a particularly large fruit bowl that, other than a couple of apples and yet more letters, was decidedly empty. The rest of the kitchen was white with a yellow patterned boarder, with bright white cupboards. It looked like a house wife's dream.
His mother stood, beaming at them. She had bright blond hair, though the black roots were starting to show through, and seemed to delight in wearing clothes meant for those at least ten years younger, though she somehow got away with it. "Hi," her voice sang out as she dried the last plate for the twelfth time.
"Mayu, this is my mum. Mum, Mayu." he greeted them quickly, hoping to get the moment over quickly.
She gave another dazzling smile, though her face seemed to strain to move after years of botox, "Please, call me Sharon," she greeted.

Mayu looked at Melville’s mother, moving slightly behind him. She’d never known a good mother, and this one was slightly scary. “Konichiwa, ma’am.” She said politely, in her distress the foreign word slipped out. Not that she cared, she just really wanted to get away. The woman was scaring her, for no real reason of course. But maybe it was just the fact she was Melville’s mother.

Sharon put her hand on her chest, trying once again to smile through her paralysed face, "Oh, my! Just look at you!"
"Mum!" Melville snapped, holding onto Mayu tightly and making sure she was shielded from her mother.
She sighed and shook her head, still looking at the two like she was going to eat them up. "Well, I was only complimenting her," she said, lovingly glaring at her son before throwing the towel to the side, walking off with a shake to her hips, "Remember to introduce her to Michael as well." she said as she walked away, obviously trying to find some other way to spy on them.
He closed his eyes, taking Mayu in his arms and letting out a nervous laugh, "Sorry..." he said slowly, "She's never been like that before. I'm guessing Dia must have been talking to her." he told her, brushing back her hair. "Want to continue?"

She shuddered, feeling awkward among his family. No one was like this at home, we all talked through psychics. “I.. uh.. Your mom is just.. wow.” She stammered, not finding a word to describe the woman. How much plastic did a girl need to hide wrinkles? Didn’t she know about the uses of magic for things like that? “We meet your dad next?” she asked, moving closer to Melville as she spoke. With a small smile she kissed his cheek, still feeling unnerved by the display his mom had just done.

He froze, looking down at her, "OK, I'll let you get away with that just this once, but if you call Michael my dad again I will have to destroy you," he said, a very serious tone lacing his joking words.
Even so, he brought Mayu by the hand, walking through the slim corridor next to the stairs and opening the door slightly. As could be expected, Sharon and Michael were both sitting there, Michael with a newspaper on the hideous red leather sofa and Sharon sitting perched on the end of the matching chair, pretending to be watching a soap opera.
"Micheal," he said in a low voice. He hated talking to Michael, and did it only when he really needed to.
He lowered his newspaper. He was a middle-aged man, not exactly aging gracefully but at least he made no effort to cover it. "Hm?" he said, watching him through very round spectacles.
"This is Mayu. Mayu, this is Diane's Dad, Michael." he greeted quickly, staying very close to the door in case they both needed to run.

Mayu froze, wondering what was so bad about this man. She forced on a smile, glad that it seemed so natural. “Hello, sir.” She said pleasantly, quickly scanning the newspaper with expert eyes. She gave a tiny bow to both in the room. “I’m Mayu, as I’m sure your lovely wife has already informed you.” She smiled again, letting her words mess up on purpose. Let them know of her heritage, it would not bother her. She stayed by Mel’s side, not willing to go farther into the room with strange people. Even if they were his family, he didn’t seem so fond of them. So she wouldn’t be either, but she’d appear to be.
